Nursing Informatics CompetenciesThe key functional area of nursing informatics most relevant to my current position as the Emergency Department Nurse Manager is Education and Professional Development. I am responsible for the hiring and orientation process of our new employees. Upon interviewing candidates, I am now questioning the level of comfort a nurse has with computers and electronic charting. I never thought this would be a question in a nursing interview when I first began my career many years ago. “Computer literacy is a core competency needed in health care and nursing practice” (American Nurses Association, 2015 p. 28). Younger candidates are proficient in their computer skills however lack clinical skills while more seasoned nurses are the exact opposite. Our (the nurse educator and myself) approach to orientation to our charting system is to develop an individualized lesson plan that is based on the level of comfort of the candidate.
