John Wilkes Booth John Wilkes Booth was born on May 10, 1838 in Maryland. He was the second of ten children to parents Mary Ann Holmes and Junius Brutus Booth. During his early life, John lived on the family’s farm, ran by their slaves. His father a very well-known actor, was also known for being a heavy drinker. In 1846, a scandal broke out about his father neglecting to divorce his first wife before he eloped with his second wife, John’s mother, twenty-five years earlier. This made a huge impact on John, as he was very proud of his family.
After his father’s death in 1852, John dropped out of St. Timothy’s Hall, a very prestigious military school. John, always considered a very handsome young man, decided to follow in his father’s and brother’s footsteps and became an actor. His first acting performance was in Baltimore. He was in Shakespeare's Richard III. His performances were such a hit, he was invited to tour around the country with a Shakespearean acting company. In 1862, he starred as the lead in
