How does functionalism explain our obsession with professional and collegiate athletics, celebrity magazines and other forms of entertainment? What are some of the “rituals” of solidarity and social cohesion? Do you participate in any of these forms of entertainment and what are your reasons for doing so? Post one item of relevant supplemental material to illustrate this approach. The functionalist approach is individuals’ interest with collegiate athletics, celeb magazines, and other forms of mass media. This approach allows all different kinds of individuals to come together and bond over common likes such as sports, fashion trends, or music. Some “rituals” of solidarity and social cohesion are attending concerts or even attending a riot. People who share some of the same interests as you or believe in most of what you believe in get together and share the same passion for a similar cause. I personally don’t like to go out too much but when it comes to artists I really enjoy, I don’t mind going to a concert. I participate in concert going just because it’s exhilarating. You can meet so many people who like the same music as you and who come together for just the purpose of great music. In, “6 Reasons Going to Concerts is Good for Your Health,” Castaneda states that attending a concert or even just listening to music:reduces stress, relieves pain, allows individuals to connect with others, gives individuals the means to reflect on their life, can be good exercise, and gives people a sense of well-being. What are some of the main claims of critical theorists about popular cultureand the media? Provide examples. Do you find critical theory's analysis convincing and why/ why not? One of the main claims of critical theorists about popular culture and the media isthat popular culture controls members of society by defining how people should live; that the only purpose is to generate a profit. An example is the advertising and marketing of things such as food or music to increase profits of a mega corporation. I do find critical theory’s analysis to be convincing because it’s true.
