Memo Re: Lab 8: Gear Trains and Speed Reducers Purpose Gear reducers provide reduction of speed between a motor and the driving part of the system in a small amount of space. The most beneficial aspect of a gear box design is its compact nature and the availability of a wide range of gear ratios and gear types. From this lab we will understand the importance of gear ratios, gear trains, and a differential gear system. We also learned the procedure required to select a speed reducer. Procedure/Results We were provided a gear train set up with six gears. We began by collecting information over the specific gears that would help us when later calculating ratios. We ran the drive at three different speeds and recorded the number of rotations. Using the information we found and the recorded data, we were able to calculate the theoretical and actual velocity ratios, and ultimately the overall speed ratio. Conclusion
