Lab Report #4: Breathing and Heart Rate iWorxSummaryIn exercise 1, we compared tidal volume (rest) with heart rate. Using a spirometer attached to the iWorx console, we measured our subjects breathing patterns during three distinct breaths. During this interval, we also measured heart rate to examine the relationship our respiratory rate has on our cardiovascular system. In exercise 2, we stimulated sleep apnea by having our subject hold her breath and measure the affects this would have on the heart rate. We took measurements initially, just as the subject began to hold her breath and at the time when the subject appeared to be running out of breath (ex. needing to exhale and inhale again). We did this to determine how heart rate is impacted when breathing stops. We wanted to see what physiological response the body may have when as it begins to realize breathing has stopped temporarily and what reactions/countermeasures it may take.
