I had three children and was 45 years old before I ever really looked at my genitals. I was amazed at the delicate shapes and subtle colors. I’m sorry it took me so long to do this because I now feel more sure of myself sexually after becoming more acquainted with me.” p. 78

GENITAL SELF-EXAM It is very important to do a genital self-exam, as most women are quite unacquainted with their genitals (as the previous slide depicts). Doing a genital self-exam has many advantages, some of which include increasing sexual comfort and monitoring for changes related to health concerns (Please see the Your Sexual Health box page 80).

LECTURE SUMMARY Now that we have discussed how important a genital self-exam is, let’s begin the lecture of female sexual anatomy by first discussing female external genital structures, then female internal genital structures, afterward a discussion on menstruation, a lecture on gynecological health concerns, and finally we will end the lecture with a discussion on breast cancer.

FEMALE EXTERNAL GENITAL STRUCTURES: THE VULVA “Judy Chicago's The Dinner Party elevates female achievement in Western history to a heroic scale traditionally reserved for men. The Dinner Party is a massive ceremonial banquet in art, laid on a triangular table measuring 48 feet on each side. Combining the glory of sacramental tradition with the intimate detail of a carefully orchestrated social gathering, the artist represents 39 "guests of honor" by individually symbolic, larger-than-life-size china- painted porcelain plates rising from intricate textiles draped completely over the tabletop. Each plate features an image based on the butterfly, symbolic of a vaginal central core. The runners name the 39 women and bear images drawn from each one's story” ---Source, Google.

FEMALE EXTERNAL GENITAL STRUCTURES: THE VULVA Often compared to certain flowers, seashells, and other forms found in nature…‘The vulva encompasses all female external genital structures: the hair, the folds of skin, and the urinary and vaginal openings….The vulva is sometimes mistakenly referred to as the vagina, an internal structure with only the opening a part of the vulva’ p. 78.

FEMALE EXTERNAL GENITAL STRUCTURES: THE VULVA The Mons Veneris: ‘The mons veneris means ‘the mound of venus.” Venus was the Roman godess of love and beauty. The mons veneris, or mons is the area covering the pubic bone. It consists of pads of fatty tissue between the pubic bone and the skin. Touch and pressure on the mons can be sexually pleasurable because of the presence of numerous nerve endings. At puberty the mons becomes covered with hair that varies in color, texture, and thickness from woman to woman. During sexual arousal, the scent that accompanies vaginal secretions is held by the pubic hair and can add to sensory erotic pleasure. Pubic hair also prevents uncomfortable friction and provides cushioning during intercourse” p. 80

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
