For converging lenses, f is positive and for diverging lenses, f is negative. If an object is to the left of the lens, the distance from the object to the lens is positive and if an object is to the right of the lens, d o is negative. If an image is to the right of the lens, the distance from the image to the lens is positive and if an object is to the left of the lens, d i is negative.
