Edwards Taylor Edwards Dr. Tindal AP Literature 20 September 2017 The Strength of a Rose Fences , a popular play by August Wilson, portrays the story of a colored family and the daily, yet meaningful, problems they face. Even though Troy Maxson is shown as the main character, his wife, Rose, is viewed as an admired figure throughout the story. She undergoes many struggles, including her family’s relationships with each other and the racial relationships during this time. Through it all, Rose keeps herself together and builds a supportive environment for others. Rose is depicted as a strong, loyal woman who does the right thing, sacrifices for others, and symbolizes the peace and beauty among the characters. In the midst of her family seeming to fall apart, Rose always does the right thing. For example, when Rose learns of Troy’s affair and how his new woman has become pregnant, she stays with him for the good of her family. When Troy returns home with his newborn baby, instead of Rose shutting Troy out to fend for himself and his child, she affirms to Troy, “I’ll take care of your baby for you cause like you say she’s innocent and you can’t visit the sins of the father upon the child... From right now this child got a mother. But you a womanless man” (II.
