ETHICAL BEHAVIOR OF BUSINESS STUDENTS AT ROCKY UNIVERSITY2Ethical Behavior of Business Students at Rocky UniversityEthics and morality was brought to the forefront of conversation in the field of business in the United States during the global recession of 2008 and 2009. Accusations of unethical behavior by Wall Street executives, financial managers, and many other corporate officers were numerous, and many of them proved to be valid. A mainstream article offered up one explanation for this widespread unethical behavior in business: Cheating had become so common in business school, that these future CFO’s and managers were becoming accustomed toacting unethically for personal gain. The article reported that 86% of surveyed business students admitted to cheating at some point during their academic career, compared to only 77% of other students. Both of these numbers are extremely concerning, and the dean of the College of Business at Rocky University took notice, compounding with his preexisting notion that cheatingat Rocky University was more common, even, than other Universities that were surveyed. The dean commissioned an anonymous study to assess the state of ethics and cheating among 90 graduating seniors. The study asked only three questions: 1. During your time at Rocky, did you ever present work copied off the internet as your own? 2. During your time at Rocky, did you ever copy answers off another student’s exam? 3. During your time at Rocky, did you ever collaborate with other students on projects that were supposed to be completed individually? An answer of yes to any one or more of the three questions represented involvement in some type of cheating. All data from the survey was compiled and presented to me for analysis. I will providemy analysis for the dean below, which should give a satisfactory assessment of the state of cheating among business students at Rocky University.
