Contrast evergreen trees and deciduous trees. Evergreen trees are fully leaved at all times, whereas deciduous trees lose their leaves each year during the cold or dry season. 4. How are xerophytic adaptations different from hygrophytic adaptations? Xerophytic adaptations allow plants to survive dry conditions, whereas hygrophytic adaptationsallow plants to survive in wet, terrestrial environments. 5. Explain the concept of climax vegetation.Climax vegetation refers to a stable association of plants that tends to change little over time--such plants can be thought of as representing "optimal" vegetation for that environment. 6. What environmental factors determine the tree line for a location? The upper treeline for a location is generally determined by a limiting low summer temperatureand to a lesser extent the availability of moisture. 7. Which major groups of animals are endothermic, and what are the advantages of this for aspecies? Mammals and birds are endothermic; this allows them to maintain a constant body temperature, even in harshly cold environments. 8. What advantage is there for an animal to hibernate during the winter? Hibernation during the winter allows animals to survive a harsh winter without the need to findfood. 9.
