Importance of Material Culture—Colonial Trash Middens Colin Renfrew and Paul Bahn refer to material culture as the buildings, tools, and other artifacts that constitute the material remains of former societies. In many cases, material culture is one of the only resources archaeologists and anthropologists have to study a specific group. Traditionally, archaeology attempted to piece together the lives of past cultures and groups of people by recreating and learning about the material culture of different stretches of time. This approach answered the question of how people were living and how they were using their environment. Material culture can provide so much information for the archaeologist and anthropologist—like why these groups of people lived in a certain way and why they used their environment the way they did, why they behaved certain ways, and ultimately how their material culture ended up the way it did.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
