Progressive, neurodegenerative disease that is one of the most common neurologic disorders of older adults Everyone will experience different symptoms No cure! Just try to manage the symptoms Caused by a decrease in the amount of Dopamine Risk factors: Genetics Environmental toxins Age (older) Men are more likely than women to get PD Clinical manifestations: FOUR MAIN CARDINAL SIGNS: tremors, rigidity, bradykinesia/akinesia, postural instability “freezing” or shuffling of the feet o Can put them at risk for falls Changes in facial expression or a masklike facies o Usually have a flat affect o Lead to inadequate nutrition o Uncontrolled drooling Emotional changes o Depression o Anxiety o Fear Changes in speech patterns o Speak soft, slurring words Bowel and Bladder problems Change in behavior (because of dopamine) Treatment Goal: Improve mobility, and lessen symptoms Drug Therapy
