Kristina Brem ID:3018162 History of the United States 1301-33411 Lesson #21, Enrichment Idea #1 1860 Presidential Election 1860 Presidential Election As 1860 rolled around, there were many discussions and rivalries about the next president. During this time there was also a major dispute between the Northern and Southern Democratic parties. The biggest concern was the idea of the abolition of slavery. The South had ruled the government for over two thirds of the time, and to end slavery, would seem to be the end of them. With that being said, in 1860, there were four main presidential candidates that would run for president on November 6 th. Candidates included Republican Abraham Lincoln, Democratic Stephen A. Douglas, Southern Democratic John C. Breckinridge, and Constitutional Union John Bell. If I were to imagine myself as a voter during this time, I would vote for Abraham Lincoln for a few main reasons. The first being, he was a new idea to the government. He had lost many campaigns for other government positions, one being the U.S. Senate Campaign against the other presidential nominee, Stephen Douglas. Even though he lost multiple campaigns, that does not discriminate his ideas and plans for America.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
