Alyssa DomantayPolitical Science 101Spring 2017Writing Assignment 1“You must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place, oblige it to control itself.”―James Madison,The Federalist Papers. The constitution has 3 main functions. First, it creates a national government consisting of a legislative, an executive, and a judicial branch, with a system of checks and balances among the three branches. Second, it divides power between the federal government and the states. And third, it protects various individual liberties of American citizens. The constitution of the United States, not only maintains order but also protects the liberty and freedoms of the people of the United States of America. “The latent causes of faction are thus sown in the nature of man; and we see them everywhere brought into different degrees of activity, according to the different circumstances of civil society.” Madison believed that the cause of factions is the cause of unequal distribution of property. To remove factions, it would cost the destruction of libertyand freedoms that allow them to exist. If you destroy liberty and freedom you destroy
government. Madison states, “destroying liberty is a cure worse than the disease itself.”
