Thoreau’s advice and sentiments in this essay are meant as suggestions for periodically reflecting on life’s true meaning. He is not telling us what we have to do to live a happy life, he is just giving us guidelines and general morals to follow throughout life. Thoreau encourages a more open mind set and a less detail-oriented life style. He throws out the idea of isolation, but doesn’t declare in any sense that it is at all necessary for a successful life. 6. Thoreau’s politics are very progressive, he spoke on many occasions against social problems like slavery, especially for the abolition of slavery and the Fugitive slave act, he still was conservative in the fact that he loved his country and adhered to all laws.
