The Simpsons: The animated family that influenced pop culture.
“When The Simpsons came around, there really was nothing else like it on TV. It's hard to imagine, but
when Fox first took the plunge with it, it was considered controversial to put animation on prime time.
The Simpson’s is an animated American sitcom that was created by Matt Groening for the
Fox Broadcasting Company. The Simpson’s, which started as a sketch on The Tracey Ullman show,
has now become America’s longest running sitcom and the the longest running American animated
program. This half an hour animated program has influenced pop culture in many different ways.
The Simpson’s was conceived by Matt Groening shortly before he was about to pitch a
series of animated shorts with producer James L. Brooks. Groening had originally planned to use
Life in Hell
characters, however, at the last moment; he realized that doing this would ruin the
characters he had created, so he made up some different characters on the spot. These characters
turned out to be the Simpson’s. Needing names for his characters he started naming them after his
own family: Matt’s father is named Homer, and his mother is named Margaret (Groening thought
it would be funnier, if he changed the mothers name to Marge.) He also has two sisters whose
names are Lisa and Maggie. Not wanting to name the main character after himself, he named him
Bart, this being an anagram of the word “Brat”. The concept of the show was the Simpson’s, who
lived in the community of Springfield, it included a father who gave bad advice and worked as the
safety inspector at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant named Homer; A mother who was loving,
nurturing and a wife who tried to keep peace in the family named Marge; a hell-raising ten year old
named Bart and a smart philosophical eight year who loves to play her saxophone named Lisa, and
a baby that communicates through sucking on her pacifier named Maggie. The Simpson’s also
include many other characters that are spread out through the community most play a re-
occcuraning role on most of the shows.
The Simpson’s first appeared in 1987 as series of thirty second spots produced for the
Emmy Award winning variety series
The Tracey Ullman Show
. The shorts became a part of the
show on April 19, 1987. After a three-season run, the sketch was developed into a half-hour prime
time show. This show, The Simpson’s, aired as a half an hour comedy series on January 14, 1990.
Since its debut the Simpson’s has now aired over 405 episodes over a total of nineteen seasons, it is
now not only the longest-running American Sitcom, but the longest-running American Animated
Show. The Simpson’s has not only been a hit with fans, but with critics too. “Its one of television’s
truest and most hilarious portraits of the American family.” said one critic from The New York
