Soc Lecture 1 Notes Sociologies of: politics ... art ... war ... science ... literature, etc., and ... RELIGION The sociological study of religion attempts to identify: (a) the social factors or bases for religious beliefs, actions, experiences, communities, etc., as well as (b) the influence and significance of religion in social life and history What is thinking? Thinking is language/ words. We became a speaking talking animal to organize ourselves. Without words we would have to live in a very limited ways. We developed a lot through talking. Sociologists insist that everything can be understood in a social way. We don’t invent anything but we learn everything through social interactions. Sociology of religion will do the same thing as all the other sociologies. It will look for the bases for religion action experience etc. Firstly religion is made through the actions you do in your life. There is also opposite how religion influences other social factors like social life. but the sociological study of religion confronts unique interpretive challenges: ONTOLOGY – concerned with the nature of “being”, reality or existence, causally & constitutively (= “what the world is and how it works”) Ontology comes from the word of study of being and study of being real. It shows you what is real what is not? Ontology helps you perceive different objects in a different way if you look at them though someone else.

EPISTEMOLOGY – concerned with the nature of knowledge, how we know things Epistemology means the way knowledge becomes possible Nature of reality and knowledge go together, they have a relationship. Technology is a big aspect in knowing as it has increased our knowing of the world Ontology and Epistemology Symbolic internationalism Robert mead and his book Psychoanalysts would solve your problems by talking to you because those problems were in your mind They thought the problems came from your childhood Sigmund Freud said all the problems came from your sexual drive that we are sexual animals. The way to solve is to bring the problem to knowledge no matter how deep it is When you bring up the topic you can talk about it and it will go away but now you treat is with pills which is shocking how it has changed so much from talking to taking pills This should show you the way of ontology (what is real, they have depth, they are stratified) and the other one (knowledge) Religion is based on a distinct ontology – the claim that there are supernatural beings or powers, or a super-sensible reality, an Absolute, Divine, or Transcendent realm that is ultimately primary and causally responsible for both the Natural world and the Social world. Social science has no direct or objective “access” to that purported Transcendent reality; it cannot be visited for purposes of measurement or examination (unlike the realities of politics, art, war, etc.) Religion: means that there are two realities one is natural and one is supernatural.
