There are five functions of the cell membrane. It acts as a barrier to protect the cell, regulation and transportation for any substance in or out of the cell, chemical messengers for other cells, a receptor, cell mobility secretions, and absorption of substances. 2. Define selective permeability. The cell membrane allows certain substances through while others cannot. Transport 3. Describe membrane permeability for oxygen, water, and carbon dioxide. Water, oxygen, and carbon dioxide moves across the membrane without mishap. These molecules have the key. 4. Describe membrane permeability for ions and glucose. Glucose cannot move throughout the membrane without the aid of membrane proteins. 5. a. What is the function of the membrane transport proteins? They allow the movement of charged or polar molecules across the plasma membrane.
