Redaction Criticism The Man with the Withered HandOctober 4, 2017Joanna ShelvinTH 105
The Man With The Withered HandIn this paper, I will compare and contrast two passages from the synoptic gospels of Lukeand Matthew. These passages are located in Luke 6:6-11 and Matthew 12:9-14. Both passages tell the stories of Jesus healing a man with a shrunken hand, on the day of the sabbath. Upon being questioned about working on the sabbath, Jesus affirmed that they would lift a sheep out ofa ditch on the sabbath and that man is more important than animals.BackgroundMatthew and Luke’s narrations are similar in telling of a man that Jesus encountered on the sabbath that had an injury. Both passages tell of how Jesus questioned those around if they would assist their sheep on the sabbath, if it happened to fall into a pit. Or if it were ok to do good or to do evil….is it ok to save a life or destroy a life? Good deeds are welcomed to be committed an any moment, including the sabbath.
