Unformatted text preview: Running head: ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP The Title of Your Paper Goes Here (it is not the same as the running head) Your name goes here Western Governors University 1 Organizational Leadership 2 T he title of your paper goes here (just on the first page) no bolding or underlining­just centered Business Practices This section is asking for you to provide analysis that includes how (1) business practices, (2) regulatory requirements, and (3) reimbursement impact patient centered care within a healthcare organization. Make sure you tie these back to how they impact patient / family centered care. A well developed paragraph for each is recommended. This section does not need to be specific to your organization. Patient and Family Centered Care Tool (PFCC) Please see attached document for completed PFCC Tool. (This allows the evaluator to know that you have uploaded the tool and to look at it in a separate attachment. The tool must be complete and attached.) Setting Description The description should thoroughly depict the healthcare setting used for the PFCC, including the population served and facility type. The description should be clear and logical. Consider facility size, types of care provided, age of facility, etc. This is the section in which you are going to talk about your organization. Make sure you describe the community and the population that the facility serves. It does not have to be lengthy (1­2 paragraphs is sufficient). (Note: Because this task requires the creation of an i nterdisciplinary healthcare team , it is imperative that you choose a “healthcare facility” as your organization. If your place of Organizational Leadership 3 employment does not meet this criteria, it is not a problem ­ you will just need to reach out to your assigned CM for assistance in determining the organization you will use. ) Strengths and Weaknesses of the Organization In this section you will identify and briefly describe the strength and weakness for each of the 11 domains from the PFCC tool. You may want to write a paragraph about each domain, using each domain as a subheading. Make sure the scores you gave the elements in the PFCC assessment tool match the narrative. If you rate all elements of one domain as a “5” you need to state, “no weaknesses identified”. You may want to create a table such as the one included below: Domain Strength Weakness Leadership/Operations Mission, Vision, Values Advisors Quality Improvement Personnel Environment & Design Information/Education Diversity & Disparities Organizational Leadership 4 Charting & Documentation Care Support Care Area of Improvement An area of improvement is identified from the weaknesses identified in part B2. The selection is presented clearly and is logical. You are to choose o ne element in one domain t hat you are going to choose to develop as your strategy. Improvement Strategy In this section you will provide a broad overview of the strategy you are going to use to address the area of improvement identified in section C above. (The specific details of the strategy are included in a later section). In this section you will discuss your strategy in regard to how it relates to the identified weakness, and how it will increase patient centeredness within the organization. The main part of your strategy is to create a multi­disciplinary team to help address the weakness identified above. Your book discusses the importance of teams and using groups as agents of change. System or Change Theory The purpose of the use of an evidence based System or Change Theory is to facilitate change efficiently and thereby decrease waste (ie. time, energy, money). In this section you will Organizational Leadership 5 first choose a System or Change Theory that would work well for the strategy you are planning to implement. You will then discuss, in detail, how each step of that system or change theory would be applied. The book has some major sections regarding both system and change theory. You can choose either system or change theory. Financial Implications The discussion precisely addresses the financial implications that the strategy may have on the organization. This section is referring to cost of the materials, personnel, and equipment that will be needed to implement the strategy. You need to think about the cost of the strategy for the organization. It can include meetings, payroll, supplies, or anything you think you might need to make this strategy tenable. You also have to discuss benefit. How will spending this money enhance patient / family centered care in the organization. Think about improved patient care, improved services, how this affects the reimbursement of your organization, how it will increase patient volumes which will increase revenue, how it will improve the reputation and what other benefits the organization might achieve. Methods This section is really talking about how you are going to determine if your strategy was effective. For example, how will you know that your strategy has made an impact on patient centered care? What you specifically will use really depends on your strategy. You may use multiple measurements (i.e. discharge surveys, employee surveys, HCAHPS scores, patient outcomes and etc.) It is recommended that you discuss getting baseline data prior to the Organizational Leadership 6 implementation of your change. You will then have information as a comparison when you look at your measurements after your change has been made. Multidisciplinary Team In this section, you are asked to create a multidisciplinary team by identifying the potential members that will assist you in implementing the identified strategy. You are also tasked to discuss the roles of each member on the team. There are two ways that you can do this. You can 1) write a narrative response that demonstrates who is on your team and what each individual does on the team, or you can create a table. A table would look like this (however you would have more team members than this): Team Member Chief Nurse Officer Role on the Team Provides insight into the delivery of care through nursing services, provides insight into the budget, and create ‘buy in’ for the strategy with nursing managers and administration. Patient The patient can provide insight into care delivery for his/her perspective. This is important to include perceptions and insight as it relates to the primary user of the facility. Organizational Leadership 7 The identification of the multidisciplinary team members and their specific roles on the team in assisting in implementing the strategy must be relevant and logical. Team Diversity In this section you will discuss the importance of cultural diversity within the multidisciplinary team and how that diversity supports the delivery of patient centered care. Think about how diverse representation on the team will insure that the care your organization is delivering is unique, special, and respective of the many different cultures/diverse groups that it serves. Also think about how diversity contributes to the discussion. Diverse teams are more creative in terms of solving problems. Leadership Theories In this section you will choose one of the following leadership theories and discuss (1) how this leadership theory is relevant to your strategy, and (2) how you will use this theory in developing your team: ● transactional leadership ● transformational leadership ● emotional leadership ● traditional leadership You must discuss how the leadership theory applies to your project. Implementation of Strategy Organizational Leadership 8 The directions in this section required a detailed discussion of how the team will work together to implement the strategy that identifies the weakness chosen earlier in the paper (in C1). The rubric requests that the discussion clearly identifies steps to collaboratively implement the strategy, including team member and individual responsibilities, and is relevant to the weakness identified in the PFCC. Communication to Organization As team members you are representing the entire organization. So, how will you communicate the work you are doing to the rest of the organization? For example, what method will you use to inform the members of the organization the plan, progress, and outcomes of the strategy you are implementing? Tools for the Team Team members all come to the table with different strengths. Through self­assessment, a team can assign duties that match individual strengths. This section is asking you to identify and discuss a specific tool to develop the team’s assessment skills. There are multiples tools listed within the texts and articles. Your book talks about emotional intelligence, communication techniques, and other tools. The tool you chose must include Self­Assessment and Self­Reflections elements. Tools such as the Keirsey Temperament Sorter or Meyer’s Briggs assessment will work. Both are excellent examples of self­assessment tools. Organizational Leadership 9 References The correct heading for sources in APA is References. T his is the only first level heading in APA that is not bolded. As with the rest of APA, the spacing is always double spaced. References, according to APA are hanging indent, alphabetized, and must have a citation or paraphrased section within the body of the paper in order to be in the reference list. This means that unless you have quoted, paraphrased it, or used a section of a website in your paper, it does not get on your reference list. Once you have cited all of your sources, go back and check to make sure they match on your reference list. ...
