Running Head: EVOLUTION OF NURSING Healthcare is very dynamic and ever evolving, the way things are done today most definitely will not be the same way things will be done 20 years from now. So, it only makes sense that the roles of the healthcare professional’s would change with the times as well. Let's look at the role of the forensic nurse; What is a forensic nurse? According to the international association of forensic nursing scope and standards of Practice: “Forensic nursing is the practice of nursing globally when health and legal systems intersect. (IAFN, 2009)”. Forensic nursing formally began to be established as a speciality in 1975, when Canadian forensic pathologist Dr. John Butt of the Calgary, Alberta’s Medical Examiner’s office hired registered nurses (RN) to work as death investigators (Early, 2016). At the same time, RNs and nurse practitioners in the USA were implementing nursing protocols for the care of their sexually assaulted patients in the form of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) programs (Forensic Nursing, 2009).” (Early,
