“A Worn Path” by Eudora Welty Name Kynzi Denton Theme Study Find textual proof/significance for each of the following elements: 1. Setting- In an unnamed town, and there are places in the story when she is on the warn path. The time period is around the 1950 because there is a car but the clinic says for colored people showing the significance of the racial inequality. 2. Characters & Significant Purpose: a. Phoenix- She was the old woman who traveled the worn path to town to get medicine for her grandson. She was around 100 years old and she still is able to travel and make it through all of the obstacles placed in her path. b. White Hunter- This was the man who came along the path and helped her up. He also sent his dog to kill the one who attacked the black woman. He then placed the gun at the black woman and thought it was funny. c. Black Children- They were the children in the street playing in the town. Seeing them in the streets hinted towards what part of town the woman was on. Also could be an age gap or innocence symbol. d. Attendant- she was rude and called her an old woman. It was also important because she was a white woman in a black part of the town.
