Lecture 2-19-08 What in the diet causes high LOL? -saturated fat 50% of people with high LOL – heart disease High LOL (primary target of therapy) Risk factors -triglycerides -low LOL Non-lipid risk factors (are modifiable) Hypertension Cigarette smoking Diabetes Overweight Physical inactivity Atherogenic diet (non- modifiable) Age Male sex Family history of card. Heart disease Emerging risk factors Apolipoprotein (a) – some people make it – higher risk Small LOL particles – LOL diff. sizes Elevated serum homocysteine – high levels from genetic with no other risk factor Thrombogenic factors – causes blood to clot Inflammatory markers – C- reactive protein (cause of infam.) ** The signs to recognize stroke/ heart attack Heart attack * gender difference: treatment, symptoms (women don’t get the same rapid response that men get at hospital) Women = more die than men Squeezing, tightness or pressure in chest (may radiate to throat, jaw, arms) Unexplained and severe fatigue, anxiety, and /or weakness
