02/07/08 Map of Mesoamerica (part 2) Middle Formative La Venta: 900-600 BC Right after San Lorenzo fell, La Venta started to rise (reasons unclear) -Pyramids appearing Natural Modeling: The natural world providing a model for human made construction -i.e. the “pyramid” looks at mountains/volcanos Plan of La Venta (images available on blackboard) -Access gets more and more restricted as you move deeper into the courtyard -Buried deep below the mosaics is a massive deposit of (over 1000 bricks) of serpentine (solid green stone) that weighed tons, about 28 layers deep -each layer carefully laid, with a layer of sand in between each layer of serpentine -giant quincunx symbol depicted as mosaic Central Court Mosaic: -design (quincunx) missing the central axis mundi: also showed a lot of erosion (unlike the others) -the ruler would probably stand in the middle and act as the axis mundi, maybe a sort of theatre
