02/12/08 Ancient Mesoamerica: Maya region Classic period: 250 CE –900 CE Palenque: 7 th c. CE The Temple of the Inscriptions at Palenque (Stone architecture) Elaborate hieroglyphic inscriptions provide much information o King lists (dynastic lineages) Built by ruler Pacal (means shield) as his funerary chamber The temple built in top is made of stone, so it has survived over time, but many did not Corbel vaulted chamber o Very narrow room, because you can’t span very wide spaces with this technique o Not made for big audiences, only elites probably entered these temples Giant hieroglyphic panel mounted on back wall of the Temple o The text is mostly deciphered (about 90% can be read) o 3 big parts 1: history of rulers at Palenque (dynastic history) 2: places the political history w/in a cosmological context (mythic time) 3: talks about all the big events in Pacal’s life (Pacal = specific ruler) o Literacy level was probably not high, so these things that were written here were
