Brandon Joyner ENG-111 Nadine Gordon April 17, 2015 The NFL’s European Takeover In this upcoming football season, the National Football League will continue its International Series at Wembley Stadium in London, United Kingdom, where 6 of its teams will play a regular season game to draw the attention of British fans. It will be the ninth year of the series and it has been the league’s strongest effort to appeal American football to people outside of the United States. The NFL has been trying to go global since August 1976 when The Saint Louis Cardinals defeated the San Diego Chargers in a game played in Tokyo. Now, the NFL seems more focused than ever to make the game of American football a global sport. In fact, they have even gone as far talking about possibly placing an entire franchise in London. "It’s going to be London’s team," NFL Comissioner Roger Goodell told an NYU conference , per the New York Post 's Bart Hubbuch. "It’ll be the London Whatevers playing the New York Giants. The logistics we can work out." (Schalter) But, can they really work out the seemingly endless logistics? A better question: Is league expansion to Europe (and beyond) realistically possible? There’s plenty of things standing in the way of going across the pond. Seems like nothing that a ten billion dollar empire that looks to become a 25 billion dollar empire by 2025 can’t handle, right?

One of the biggest points used by the league’s naysayers opposed to this move to Europe use is the NFL’s past failures outside the United States. The NFL’s biggest flops oustide American soil was the American Bowl and NFL Europe. The American Bowl was a series of preseason games played from 1986-1997. These games were similar in fashion to the preseason- kickstarting Hall Of Fame Game, except they were played outside the country. The United Kingdom (specifically London) hosted eight American Bowls, more than any other country. 32

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
