The Whitehall Study was a large cohort study designed to investigate the social determinants of
health.
The study was established in 1967 by investigators at University College in London and
enrolled over 18,000 male British civil servants.
Study participants received a physical
examination at baseline and were interviewed about their medical history, health behaviors, and
professional status.
Participants’ employment grade in the British Civil Service was used as a
proxy for socioeconomic status.
The health outcomes of the civil servants were obtained using
the Central Registry of the National Health Service and follow-up over the 7.5-year study period
was outstanding (>99%).
