Informative speaking : publicly addressing others to increase their knowledge, understanding, or skills—in several different ways. 1. Includes: Defining, describing, explaining, and demonstrating. B. Informative Speeches Can Define 1. One method is defining : providing the meaning or a word or concept a) Identify the denotative meaning: dictionary definition b) Explain the connotative meaning: socially or culturally applied meaning c) Provide Etymology: Origin or histor d) Give synonyms/antonyms:(usual, ordinary, typical, abnormal, odd) e) Define by example: help the audience to understand a concept by providing examples that illustrate its meaning f) Compare-and-contrast definitions: discuss similarities and differences between two or more definitions of a term. C. Informative Speeches can Describe 1. Describing : using words to depict or portray a person, a place, an object, or an experience 2. Two forms of description: representation and narration. a) Representation : describe something in terms of its physical or psychological attributes b) Narration : Describe a series of events in sequence D.
