y11 ch8.3-4 1 Ch 8 Collisions Key Concepts In any system of two or more particles in which the net force on each particle is due only to interactions with the other particles of the system, the total momentum (vector sum of the momenta of the particles) is constant , i.e., con- served P = p A + p B + ... = const . The law of conservation of momentum is more universal than conservation of energy Elastic collision: total kinetic energy (KE) is con- served , 1 2 m A v 2 A 1 + 1 2 m B v 2 B 1 + ... = 1 2 m A v 2 A 2 + 1 2 m B v 2 B 2 + ... Inelastic collision: total KE is not conserved . Elastic head-on collision with target at rest ( v B 1 =0 ) v A 2 = m A m B m A + m B v A 1 ,v B 2 = 2 m A m A + m B v A 1 ; (1) Inelastic and completely inelastic collisions.
