Running head: WINDOWS NETWORK PROPOSAL FOR GLOBAL ADVERTISING, INC. Windows Network Proposal for Global Advertising, Inc. University of Maryland University College This paper was prepared for CMIT 371, instructed by Jonathan Thrall Proposal Overview Global Advertising Inc (GAI) is an advertising firm, based out of Houston, focused on delivering high quality marketing products in a fast-paced industry. With the recent success, the firm has acquired the Media Guru Group (MGG) company to enlarge the footprint within the industry as well as deliver more focused products for which MGG has made a name for themselves. It has been requested by management to integrate both companies, all aspects of the business can function, collaborate, and be managed. For this to occur, it is recommended GAI
WINDOWS NETWORK PROPOSAL FOR GLOBAL ADVERTISING, INC. 1 and MGG utilize the roles and services within Microsoft Windows Server 2012. Those specific recommendations will be the utilization of the following: Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) with forest trusts, File and Storage services, Windows backup for disaster recovery, Domain Name System (DNS), Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP), Failover and load balancing clusters for high availability, Active Directory Certificate Services (AD CS) for authentication, Active Directory Right Management Services (AD RMS) for application level protection, and Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS). Active Directory (AD) Infrastructure The recommendation for integrating the MGG domain into GAI’s existing forest, is to leave the existing domains in place and enable the sharing of resources through the creation of a cross-forest trust. All of the domain controllers (DCs) at both locations either already run, or will be upgraded to Microsoft Server 2012. Server 2012 supports an in-place upgrade option from Server 2008. There is an assumption that the Server 2008 version being utilized by MGG is a 64-bit version. There is also an assumption that the administrators assigned to MGG in Richmond have the required skillset and budget to upgrade the DCs from 2008 to Server 2012. Forest Functional Levels The forest functional level in Houston, the location for GAI, will be set to match the current domain functional level of Server 2012. In Richmond, the MGG administrators will first perform the in-place upgrade of their DCs to Server 2012, as mentioned above. The current domain functional level of Server 2003 does support having DCs running Server 2012. After the DCs have been upgraded, and once replication has been confirmed to be operational, the forest functional level will also be raised to Server 2012. Having both locations at the same forest functional level will maximize functionality for users at both sites.
