HUM 100 Project 1 Artifact Chart Dylan A. MacLean Artifact What is your chosen artifact ? Include a link to or a picture of the artifact. The Statue of Liberty I. Describe the artifact in detail. For instance, how would you describe it to someone who could not see it? The weathered copper Statue of liberty stands 305 feet and 6 inches tall from pedestal to tip and weighs 450 thousand pounds. She is placed on an island in New York’s harbor dressed in a cloak holding a torch with 24-carat gold flame raised in the air. Lady Liberty is wearing a crown with 7 rays. At her hip she holds a tablet with “JULY IV MDCCLXXVI”, at her feet are broken shackles. Lady Liberty herself measures 111 feet 6 inches with a face 8 feet long and a 35 foot waistline. II. Choose elements of the artifact that you believe are most important to how you experience it and explain why. For instance, what particularly catches your senses or makes you want to keep experiencing it? Does the choice of medium impact your experience? Due to the location of the Statue and the history of Ellis Island the gold covered Torch being held into the air is one of the most prominent features. In my humbled American opinion, she is lighting the way to our proud country. In addition to the torch, the tablet with the date America became an independent country. The day our founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, America was born and home to what is now known as the free world. The broken shackles on her ankles are to resemble the freedom of America. The statue wouldn’t have as great of a significance as anything else. This is one of the largest statues of its time, in addition its standing on an island outside of one of the largest cities in America and the an immigration inspection stations that processed 12 million people into Americans over 60 years.
Assumptions about your artifact III. State your opinion on what you believe is the purpose of this artifact and the success of the creator in achieving the purpose. For instance, what message do you believe the creator is trying to express, and is that message successfully expressed? My current belief on this very widely known and slightly controversial artifact is that is a symbol of our independence and not only a gift but an admiration for our beliefs, values, and world position at one point in time.
