MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS THE MOVIE INDUSTRY CASE STUDY 1. What competitive forces have challenged the movie industry? What problems have these forces created? What changes have these problems caused the movie and television studios to make? There are various competitive forces existing or arising in the market and these vary greatly from one industry to another. The causative factors for the various competitive forces may arise from both internal and external organizations` environment. Some of the competitive forces are fully controllable whereas others are totally incontrollable and may cause a company to depart from earlier adopted strategies and operational techniques. In the case of the movie industry, the dynamic technological innovations and the emergence of alternative avenues for customers to access the movies has given rise to various drawbacks and challenges in the initially adopted marketing and sales strategies for companies in the industry. The main forces depicted in the various changes in accessing of movies and marketing efforts are the new market entrants through the emerging companies providing a more accessible avenue for the customers to obtain the movies. Chapman, (2012) asserts that there are various companies emerging in the movie industry with new and more preferable avenues to distribute their products through internet resources and live streams. The traditional TV and theatre method of gaining access to new movie releases was the main avenue targeted by the older companies and with the widespread high speed internet access and unlimited gadgets to enable live streaming at very low or even no costs, the modern companies have gained an upper hand over the traditional approach. The emergence of substitute products is another noted competitive force arising from the availability of many companies with web resources to avail the movies in live streams unlike the initially used product distribution in form of movie DVDs. This has also been greatly enhanced by the high accessibility of high speed internet creating a new avenue to obtaining resources, legally and illegally hence causing the traditional methods to become obsolete. According to Larry, (2004), the developments in the technological applications especially in the internet and web utilities present a less controllable alternative to the companies` marketing and sales efforts. It is also open to illegal users of the movies produced by these companies. As much as the movie producing companies try to curb the unauthorized download outlets, there is little progress made as monitoring the vast websites is rather an impossible pursuit. The forces have resulted in numerous inefficiencies in the movie industry and replacement of the traditional yet effective methods with new methods based on the internet and less beneficial to the companies. The new entrants in the industry are setting a lower mark for the industry by utilizing methods that do not bring any profit to the movie producing companies.
