Lecture 1-22-08 GRG 301K The “Spheres” • Hydrosphere • Lithosphere • Biosphere o The living part • Atmosphere o A mixture of many different gases o The composition of the atmosphere is NOT constant…as it changes from place to place and  time to time o Water vapor is the most variable gas in the earth’s atmosphere Composition of the Atmosphere • Permanent gases (98% by volume) o Nitrogen (N) 78.08% o Oxygen (O) 20.95% o Argon (A) .93% o Neon (Ne) .001% • Variable gases (2% by volume) o Variable gases are greenhouse gases; water vapor and CO2 (very important ones)  Allows energy :  to pass through and then holds the heat o Water Vapor (H2O)  0%-tundra, :  deserts  4%-rainforests, tropics : o Methane (CH4) o Ozone (O3)  3 :  chemically bonded oxygen atoms; appears very suddenly; unstable compound :  Form of pollution—on the ground (bad)  Stratospheric ozone-helps filter :  out bad ultraviolet radiation from the sun (good) o Aerosols/particulates
