Chaves, Mark, “Abiding Faith,” Chapter 33 in Adler & Adler.      If social institutions do not reflect religion; the religion in that society will not affect  change Poor ppl are more religious  Religion is still alive, it continues to grow but in breadth not depth (ppl affiliate  themselves with a religion but are not religious) Peek, Lori, “Muslim Self-Identities After 9/11,” Chapter 34 in Adler & Adler.     Islam is the fastest growing religion in the US Religious identity and expression serve to ease the troubles/tensions caused by  immigrant and ethnic diversity (therefore, when individuals define themselves their  national differences are less important because they share the same religion) 3 stages of religious identity development: o 1) ascribed identity Religion is absorbed when seen done by parents and society long before  it is understood intellectually o 2) chosen identity As ppl mature and they study their religion they decide whether to  continue it
