Managing & Expressing Emotions & Moods Characteristics of Emotions Reactive o Emotions don’t just happen o Something prompts you to fell this way Finding partner in contact with ex Arousing o Emotions pump you up o You feel your body changing o Sympathetic nervous system Interpreted as “Emotion” o If I am all pumped up but don’t interpret it as anger, it is not considered an emotion o It is classified as a feeling Constrained by historical, cultural, relational, & situational norms o Italian men are aggressive with their emotions o Men vs. Women Who is more emotional? Feelings Short term reactions to events that generate only limited arousal o Attraction to a stranger Do not trigger attempts to manage their experience or expression Moods Low-intensity states that are not caused by particular events o Not triggered/ Not reactive o Do not blow up o Flowing along Typically last longer than feeling or emotions o While emotions might happen 0-3 times a day, feelings happen 100s of times, you are always in a mood Finding for Mood Effects People in “good” (positive) moods are more likely to : o Form positive Gestalts of others o Judge new acquaintances as sociable, honest, giving, & creative o Openly disclose thoughts & concerns to close relationship partners People in “bad” (negative) moods : o Typically prefer social isolation Leave me alone Worst Strategies to Improve Your Mood!
