l Central Claim of Paragraph Structural Move/Action 1 The work of Edward Said is critiqued to be a mixture of politics and academy. His work jumps from topic to topic and is always willing to enter a broader world. A introduction of the writer’s life. Suggest the underlying controversy about the writer’s writing style. 2 There are certain controversies around both Said’s essays and his life. These controversies together raise a question of why would Said, a writer with such incredible talent, “embroil himself in some of the thorniest political issues if his time”? A transition from the introduction to a question. 3 What was the motivation for Said to combine political activism with academics when there was a high “cost” for that? Raised a question about the motivation for the target essayist to employ a certain writing style. 4 Behrends states that Said’s actions can be explained by specifically focusing on the importance of knowledge that can be seen in Said’s works.
