Bushra Hasan Mingrone, pd3 Rhetorical Analysis of a Magazine Ad Often, advertisements are used to persuade customers to purchase a company’s latest creation or argue that their company’s brand is better than the rest. However, the frequency of these ads has desensitized the general public to believe that what these companies are saying is true. Keeping this in mind, ads that call for something other than the purchase of a brand name catch the attention of the reader. This ad by the World Food Programme effectively uses pathos and ethos to ask the audience for donations to aid refugees. The appeals to pathos in the advertisement support the purpose of the ad, which is to request donations. The reader’s eye is immediately drawn to the photo of a worried mother wearing a hijab and her son, who appears distressed. This photo evokes the feelings of despair and compels the audience to listen to the boldface text directly beneath the photo reading “Syrian refugees need your support”.
