Orr 1 Suzanna Orr Thomas Anderson Friday, June 30, 2017 A Clockwork Orange One film that I had never seen before was A Clockwork Orange . I also have never read the book A Clockwork Orange written by Anthony Burgess in 1962. I had always heard mixed reviews about the film, but knew nothing about it. With it being a classic and popular film, I decided to watch it, and write about it for this paper. A Clockwork Orange was released in Canada and premiered in New York on December 19, 1971. It was released to the public in the United States on February 2, 1972. Stanley Kubrick, who also directed The Shining from 1980, was the director. Kubrick was also the writer for the film. Credit must also be given to Anthony Burgess, since the film is based on his novel, A Clockwork Orange . Warner Bros. was the production company for the film. It was filmed in England and the budget was around two million dollars. The popular website, imdb.com, classifies A Clockwork Orange as a crime, drama and sci-fi film. A Clockwork Orange won several awards and racked up a large amount of nominations as well. In 1971, it won for Best Picture by the New York Film Critics Circle. In 1972 the film won an Academy Award for Best Picture, a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture, a Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, at the Venice Film Festival for Best Foreign Film, and Best Film from the Kansas City Film Critics. Also, in 1973, the film won a BAFTA Award for Best Art Direction by John Barry. Nominations in 1972 included were from the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, Directors Guild of America and the Writers Guild of America. In 1973, it was nominated for 7 BAFTA Awards including Best Soundtrack by Brian Blamey, John
Orr 2 Jordan, and Bill Rowe. Most recently, A Clockwork Orange was nominated in 2011 for a Satellite Award in the Best Classic DVD category. A Clockwork Orange stars Malcolm McDowell as the leader Alex and he also does most of the narrating for the film. “The main character is a charismatic, antisocial, delinquent whose interests include classical music (especially Beethoven), rape, and what is termed “ultra- violence” ” ( A Clockwork Orange film, wikipedia.com). It also stars Warren Clarke as Dim, Michael Tarn as Pete, and James Marcus as Georgie. Dim, Pete, and Georgie are what Alex calls his droogs, or as Americans call them, friends. Adrienne Corri plays as Mrs. Alexander, and Patrick Magee plays as her husband, Mr. Alexander. The film is set in a fascist London at an unspecified time in the future. Alex and his droogs are sitting around drinking milk laced with drugs. They then go and almost be a homeless man to death. Then Georgie, Dim and Pete hold a woman’s arms and legs while Alex strips her preparing to rape her. Oddly, while Alex is in the process of all of this, he is singing the song “Singing in the Rain”.
