1 Dedrekia Houston Doctor Dorsey EDUC 1300 22 October 2017 Career Research Essay My name is Dedrekia Houston. I am 26 years old and a mother of two kids: An eight-year old son and a five-year old daughter. I am in college studying to become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. I am in my freshman year of college, studying at Houston Community College. I am currently taking fundamentals math and prerequisite courses that will qualify me to get accepted into nursing school. The nursing school I plan to attend is University of Houston. My passion for becoming a Pediatric nurse started from a passion to become a Pediatrician. After I had my son I knew I wanted to do something where I was helping children. My love for kids developed through my two kids because I love them so much and just want to see them healthy and happy. My biggest fear as a parent is not knowing what is medically wrong with my kids when they are having health issues. Since my son was a baby and I would rush him to the hospital every time he was sick, I knew I wanted to be the one who knew what was wrong with him and how I could help him to become healthy. The reason why I changed my career from a Pediatrician to a Pediatric Nurse Is because of the long work hours Pediatricians must endure as well as the amount of years it takes for school and the debt I will be in once I’m finished with school. According to the occupational Handbook, a Nurse Practitioner makes a median Salary of $107,460 per year. Registered nurses make a median annual salary of $66,340 and Nurse Practitioners make a median salary of $102,670 (-
2 nursing). Before I become a Nurse Practitioner I can start off as a Pediatric Nurse. As a Pediatric Nurse I can work in multiple settings such as Doctors offices, hospitals, community service centers, and schools. I will first need to obtain a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing. This is a four- year degree and will qualify me to become a registered nurse.
