Tarek ThebargeMrs. FrancoAPUSH Period 420 February 2015ReconstructionReconstruction began in the United States during and after the Civil War, in which theUnited States attempted to readdress slavery and many other economic, social and politicallyissues including the poor relationship between the North and the South. These problems werehighly significant in America, many tried to resolve these problems, but these issues led to theCivil War. During the Civil War Lincoln offered to readmit Confederate states leaving slaveryintact. Because no state accepted the offer, on January 1, 1863 he issued the EmancipationProclimation freeing slaves. Starting December Eighth 1863 Confederate states needed tenpercent of the population to pledge loyalty and accept emancipation; known as the Proclimationof Amnesty. Soon after Lincoln had been assassinated, Andrew Johnson took office and begannew programs. In the beginning Radical Republicans Unfortunately although there werenumerous new constitutions and laws introduced to tackle these issues, it could be said thatreconstruction did indeed fail, and there was a variety of reasons that many historians touch uponto why reconstruction did not fulfil its purpose. Two significant acts were passed by congress in1867, as many more were attempted to be passed, but in reality little had changed botheconomically and socially in America, especially the South who suffered the loss against theNorth, instead the ‘reconstruction era’ ironically consisted of numerous riots and graphicviolence and failure instead of making the Country a better place socially, economically and
politically, most historians would agree but it is still debated on what the fundamentally reasonfor this was, it was quoted that It could be said that a significant reason to why reconstructionfailed was due to the strong white opposition in the South and the way that United States wasconstructed socially. The whites in the south simply didn’t want change and some laws that waspassed wasn’t going to stop them, they already felt dominated and humiliated from the Northafter the Civil War and principally wanted to hold their ground. They were angry over the factthat they shared no political power in the country, and that their states were being forced tochange, when majority was satisfied, therefore resulted in lashing out socially and fightingagainst the ‘new era
