CONCEPTS OF MEASUREMENTS 2 The Concepts of Measurements The concepts of measurements considered in this assignment include temperature, fluid pressure, and volumetric flow rate. The task of this work is to indicate methods of analyses of these concepts. Measurement is the process of assigning numbers to object in a way that ensures that specific properties of the objects have been well represented by the particular features of the figures. It is also the magnitude of a certain quantity about an agreed standard. The methods of measurements should be sensitive. This is the level of precision in the measures obtained. It should be valid which refers to what you measure is what you say you measure. It should also be reliable which relates to the extent which a measurement is free from errors that are random. Methods of Measuring Temperature Thermometers Glass tube thermometers are used to give high precise measurements.It uses mercury as the fluid of measurement, hence preferred to other types. Mercury has high-temperature capabilities which give it a high expansion rate. The range and accuracy of the thermometer depend on the size of the hole, length of the tube and fluid inside the thermometer. The smaller that the reading increases, the less range it has. For example, a 0. C accuracy mercury 1 1 thermometer with 10 C range will be about 610mm long. The accuracy of a thermometer 1 1 depends on the process of manufacturing and its usage. For example, the pressure exerted on the glass bulb, and the amount of immersion will affect the accuracy (Gomersall, 2014). Lastly, they cannot provide digital results hence their use is limited where manual readings are required. For an electric switch to operate, a conductive element lies inside the glass tube. First, the mercury touches it at the operating point and secondly at the bottom thus creating an electrical switch. Probes Probes is a method of measuring temperature consisting three instruments: Resistance elements, thermopiles, and semiconductors. The thermistor is a part of the thermal resistance, and it changes resistance with temperature. The resistance change is represented in the following way: ∆R =k ∆T (Kraemer and Chen 2014). The change in resistance is ∆R, the resistance coefficient of the material is k, and the temperature change is ∆T. With a change in temperature, the thermistor changes its resistance in electrical. The new thermistor used today is a semiconductor which has the capability of changing mostly in strength for slight changes in temperature. Thermistors have good accuracy which ranges between 0.
