2 Modern Day Policing and Society: Where We are Headed? Throughout history policing has changed dramatically. Policing has been a work in progress due to laws and technology changes. In America we recognize three eras in policing, they are political, reform and community. In this paper I will be describing two of the policing eras that stood out to me. Reform Era (1930-1980) The reform era of was where policing increased emphasis on professionalism, education, training and performance. During this era policing was very corrupt and law enforcement did whatever they had to get a confession out of suspects. In the reform era technology was added like police cars, radio communication, public records, and finger printing. However, new technology made citizens feel that law enforcement was un approachable and couldn’t be trusted. Police were no longer viewed as the protector about as the agitators. Community Era (1980-present) In this era the overall goal is to is to improve the quality of life for citizens. Officers began patrolling on foot again, which made their relationship with the communities turn back to intimate. This era was designed to reduce crime and fear of crime by keeping the same officers
