Advanced Computer Applications 1 st Period 10-10-17 Honors Project #2 Cotard Syndrome is a mental disorder that gives the delusion that the person is dead, does not exist, is putrefying, or has lost their blood and internal organs. It is most commonly found in patients who have a history of other mental illnesses, including severe depression. Cotard Syndrome is also known as “Walking Corpse Syndrome” and “Nihilistic Delusion”. Cotard Syndrome is very rare disorder. was nicknamed Mademoiselle X who claimed that she was missing several of her body parts and organs, including her brain, chest, stomach and intestines. Mademoiselle X also believed that she was “eternally damned.” Since she denied having innards, she didn’t see a need to eat, and therefore soon died of starvation. Cotard claimed that the condition was a form of delusion that is associated with severe depression (Griffiths). Symptoms of Cotard Syndrome include: depression, suicidal thoughts, negative thoughts, the belief that their body doesn't exist, belief they are already dead, the belief they are immortal, the belief they have no blood, and the belief their body is rotting Belief they have no internal organs.
