The United States West Map Activity- Use map pencils to complete. After the Civil War, the nation’s population boomed and farmers began looking westward to the Great Plains. Shade the Great Plains in green and label with the state’s abbreviations. The transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869; railroad companies encouraged eager farmers to buy land. The Homestead Act of 1862 awarded 160 acres of public land to any settler who would farm the land for at least five years. This encouraged thousands of immigrants from European countries, to pour into the land west of the Mississippi River. Label the Mississippi River, Ohio River, Missouri River, Arkansas River, Rio Grande, St. Louis, Chicago and New Orleans. (Use blue for rivers). The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
