NUR 111 Health, Wellness, and Illness 2017 Description: This module introduces the concept of health, wellness, and illness. The exemplars are physical fitness, exercise, diet/nutritional screening, oral health, consumer education, lifestyle choices, and self-management/screening. Unit Outcomes: Discuss the concept of Health, Wellness, and Illness. (N2) Health is the more than just the absecne of an illness/injury, it is the active process in which a person moves toward ones maximum potentional. Each persons concept of health is different. It is based on how someone feels, the absence of symtoms, and the persons ability to mainting ADL's. Dunns describes wellness as functionuing to one's maximum potential while maintaining balance and a purposeful direction in the enviroment. It is an active state of being healthy; living a life that promotes good physical, mental, and emotianal health. Illness is a persons response to a disease. It is defined as either acute or chronic. Acute illness usually has a rapid onset and lasts for a short period of time. Chronic illness usually progresses slowly and is usually a permanent change. The person may go through periods of remission (disease still present but no symptoms) and exacerbation (symptoms of disease reappear).
