My Experience with Grammar My Experience with Grammar before The Grammar Slammer: Com 101 Grammar has always been a nuisance to me. It is like a pesky fly buzzing in my ear that I swat away but somehow always returns to annoy me again. It has caused me fits, lowered my grades on papers, and consumed precious time as I tried to learn its intricacies hoping to improve upon our relationship. However, despite my dedication, grammar and I still do not see eye to eye. I am still unsure of all the grammar rules of the English language. It continues to baffle me and therefore, I need counseling in order to improve upon my relationship with grammar. I believe that Com 101 will allow me to develop a healthy relationship with grammar so we may finally communicate and get along. Unfortunately, grammar was not something that was focused upon regularly in our school district. Grammar was taught in the third and fourth grades, but after that no great focus, outside of the red marks on assignments, was given to grammar again until my sophomore year of high school. My mom always told me how throughout her elementary and high school years she had specific classes dedicated to grammar and I found that to be unusual since this was not my experience. In my previous school, I was the sports editor for our school newspaper. My job description detailed that I must be, no offense to anyone, a “grammar Nazi.” I was told to be aware of all the little details and rules that apply with proper grammar. I was also required to take a course on copy editing in which a portion of this course was focused on grammar. As I struggled, I realized that what my mom had told me about grammar specific classes was something I could have benefitted from. High school was a simply a refresher as it was part of my English Lit class. I had long forgotten all the rules I was taught in elementary school. I had to
