Barriers have existed, especially in the past, which have impeded the work necessary to develop the knowledge base of nursing. Many of these barriers are related to issues of gender and knowledge in a female-dominated profession like nursing. In the workforce environment, barriers have existed regarding gender. Historically, nursing as been viewed as a female-dominated profession. According to Florence Nightingale, it is natural for women to be nurses, but not so natural for men. Caring is said to be one of the basic foundations of nursing and it is something that is recognized as a female quality and is questioned for that of males. This may be due to the characteristics of the male gender or the preexisting public image of the man (Zamanzadeh, Valizadeh, Negarandeh, Monadi, & Azadi, 2013, para. 1). The male role was viewed to be assertive, strong, and dominant. Whereas, nursing was seen as caring, nurturing, domestic, humble, and giving, all qualities describing
