In what ways has your understanding of “literacy” changed as a result of reading, talking, and observing? How are you figuring out how to be a student, a member of new academic communities? In the short three weeks that I have been at Syracuse, my understanding of literacy and knowledge of all that it entails has changed greatly. Before I came to school my idea of being literate only involved the ability to read. Since then, I have learned that in order to be literate one must have rhetorical agility. One must be able to read, interpret and analyze a variety of mediums such as text, audio, video, etc. Not only must one be agile, one must be up to date with the rapidly changing new forms of technology. Someone can go from being literate to illiterate within a short window of time if they are unable to keep up with and learn new aspects of technology. One must also be well versed throughout different platforms of social media in order to be considered literate. Those who I once considered literate, like my parents for
