II. Network Addressing A. Subnetting Business Needs UMUC needs each classroom, computer lab, library and office group on separate networks. The ISP has issued 1 IP address to UMUC for its use in the new space. The easiest way to achieve this separate network with 1 IP address is by subnetting the network. As a result, we have proposed subnetting as a means of creating the separate and distinct network needed to achieve UMUC’s desired results in a more cost effective way. Proposed Subnetting UMUC has been issued and IP address of 199.1.2.0/24, a Class C IP address. They need 8 separate and distinct networks within their space, as seen in Table 2. To get 8 distinct networks within 199.1.2.0/24, we will borrow 3 bits from the host ID. If we use the binary number chart in table 1, we can see how we define our subnet by borrowing 3 bits. A bit has two values, on or off where 1 is on and 0 is off. Since we need to borrow 3 bits you would start by counting by the power of 2
