Introduction: Work-life balance refers to the ability to pursue the attainment of both career objectives and personal life fulfilment (Heathfield, 2016). In recent years, there has been increasing technological usage attributed by the greater convenience and accessibility that our technological devices have provided us with. Due to this, heightened connectivity is derived outside of working hours and hence, giving rise to greater flexibility in work arrangements, which is the main cause of an increase in work-life balance. There is a need to acknowledge that the ‘ideal’ definition of work-life balance varies from person to person (Smith, 2012). Nevertheless, in this essay, I will be adopting the concept of the Work-Family Border theory which refers to the “satisfaction and good functioning at work and at home, with a minimum of role conflict” (Clark, 2000). Flexibility derived from technology: Due to the rapid advancement of technology in the past few years, there have been many different types of platforms surfacing to better meet the needs of the working class. These applications and software help to facilitate and increase the convenience of meetings between colleagues. Such platforms, commonly known as “ Telepresence technology or digital communication apps” (Gray, 2016) are equipped with functions such as video conferencing. Thus, f ace-to-face interactions can still be proceeded through “the transmission of life-size, high-definition images and audio” (Beal, n.d.). The emergence of such technology makes it possible for employees from certain professions to work from home since it allows individuals to carry on with their discussions even though they may not be physically present at the workplace (Apgar, 1998). Such technology promotes collaborative team effort across “organizational and geographic boundaries”( Apgar, 2014) which is especially important for employers who may need to lead in the discussions with his fellow employees. employers and employees are able to freely and conveniently participate in discussions with their colleagues via technological devices, it empowers them with greater freedom to cater to personal life despite being in the workforce (Gray, 2016). The proliferation of technology has been significantly beneficial to the working-class population today (White, n.d.). Technology ultimately provides them with the autonomy and flexibility in their working hours and personal lives as long as they are able to complete their assigned work by the deadline (Gray, 2016). Since there lies greater flexibility in terms of the arrangement of schedule which is derived from the ease of accessing work materials online, it gives many working parents more autonomy in their time management. This enables parental responsibilities to be fulfilled without compromising on the deadlines for their work submissions, minimising role conflicts.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
